If you win in the next spin you are not paid any prize but you get your original bet back meaning you only loose half your bet. This in real terms reduces the house edge to only 1.35%.
Bets in Roulette
There are mainly two types of bets depending on whether it is made on particular numbers or not. Bets made on particular numbers are called inside bets while bets made on other criteria are called outside bets.
Single or straight bet is a case where you bet on a single number. If the ball rests on the selected number then you are paid in the ratio of 35 to 1. But this is the most difficult bet to win in roulette. The probability of winning increases with an increase in the numbers betted on but the pay out ratio reduces inversely. For example, a split bet, i.e. a bet on two numbers increases your chances of winning from 1 out 37 to 2 out 37. But the payout ratio reduces from 35 to 1 to 17 to 1.
Outside bets offer greater probability of winning but with the lowest payout ratios ranging from 2 to 1 to 1 to 1.
